Dedicated To
First Sergeant Mark Matthews
|
On September 6, 2003, the North Carolina Buffalo Soldiers Fayetteville Chapter made a visit to First Sergeant Mark Matthews in Washington, D.C. He is an original Buffalo Soldier who trained and rode horses for the U.S. Army. 1st Sgt. Matthews is now a 109 year old veteran
When we arrived we were met by his daughter Mary Watson, who gave us a brief overview of his condition and welcomed us into her home to visit with her father.
We were able to visit for a little over an hour. During our visit 1st Sgt. Matthews was in good spirits, very talkative, and still very sharp. The North Carolina Buffalo Soldiers Fayetteville Chapter made a request to honor 1st Sgt Matthews as an Honorary Member of the North Carolina Buffalo Soldiers Fayetteville Chapter.
He stated that he would be honored to be a member of the North Carolina Buffalo Soldiers Fayetteville Chapter. We then presented him with a Honorary Member Certificate. It was a thrill to have the chance to visit and meet with a live Buffalo Soldier who did so much to clear the way for blacks in the U.S. Military and abroad.
We say to 1st Sgt. Matthews and his family from the NC Chapter "Thank You".
